Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano says he has tested positive for the coronavirus and will be in quarantine for two weeks.

Castellano, 42, tested positive as part of a physical that officials at Gulfstream Park mandated as a prerequisite before being cleared to ride in Saturday’s Florida Derby. Castellano says he has not had “known contact with anyone that has tested positive.”

Gulfstream Park said Castellano, who has not been back to the track since he last rode there March 15, is asymptomatic at this time.

“Our thoughts go out to Javier Castellano today and we are so glad to hear he is asymptomatic,” the track’s statement said. “… It is because of our strict protocols requiring all jockeys to be screened prior to entering the facility that Javier’s sympoms were recognized and he was able to be tested for which we know he is thankful.”

Castellano rode two mounts at Gulfstream on March 15. He returned to New York to visit with family afterward and was scheduled to ride at Gulfstream this weekend.

It’s unclear whether Castellano could have ridden at Gulfstream this weekend even if the physical had not found that he has the coronavirus. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order earlier this week calling for anyone who flies to Florida from New York City or the surrounding areas to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Gulfstream Park said Castellano would not be able to return to the facility until after his quarantine is complete and he has received a clean bill of health from doctors.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
